The Day That Time and Distance Collapsed... 

I was in this Telecom and Internet business at that moment in 1998 when it happened. It was a pretty exciting moment for all of us John Q Public types, when the possibility arrived for us to be in two places at once. We could actually beam a signal across copper and fiber and air and space, that would appear to be the image of ourselves, and having that happen on the other end somewhere on the other side of the world. All this was literally taking place at light speed, so that this video communication could happen at the speed of a telephone call in the United States (which was the best network, by far in the world at the time, and probably will be for some years into the future); that speed, believe it out not is less than 60 milliseconds. That is the speed in which we must communicate in a phone conversation for it to sound normal to us. That is a call without jitter, echo, or cut outs in it. That 60 milliseconds was like the 4 minute mile was for the a human to run; until Frank Banister cure us of the belief that is was impossible, as we were lead to believe in the

that was impossible to do over the public internet with VOIP. 
Well just about all the leaps forward in mobile phones to Smartphones were able to happen and be smart because of the early work we did with a packet based solution, that is now all things digital; Voice and Video are all transmitted with packets of 1s and 0s. Which means everything you hear and see on the internet, or hear, are just trillions of on and off signals put together and taken apart and reassembled. Sort of like Star Trek getting beamed up, or down to a planet. 
All that took place 17 years ago, and we have come so very far. But most of us in the innovation and invention side of our movement to shrink the world and make it a better, more informed place. A place where everyone could get educated by the best of the best in the field, so the could get the best doctor care to the most remote parts of the world. That we will all have more education about our similarities and see each other more human through interaction. Those of us have seen and even have the technology to go so much further; like holograms of entire families beamed to grandmas bedside the moment anything goes wrong, for comfort and loving words and expression, for a true to life visit. Those things are possible NOW! the economics are just staggering for everyone to be able to posses that ability. However, do not fear, it was the same problem 17 years ago when we were trying to figure out how to elevate the need for a house phone, and get high speed access that "Last Mile" to your homes.
